The Ultimate Vacation Packing Checklist: What to Pack Before You Go

Packing doesn't have to be stressful

You've booked your trip. Your hotel is ready. Your transportation is planned. Now comes the part many travelers either love or hate: packing.

The easiest way to avoid forgetting something important is to create a checklist before you start putting things into your suitcase. Here's a general vacation packing checklist to help you get started.

Travel documents

Keep important documents somewhere secure and easy to access. Consider packing: identification, passport if required, travel confirmations, hotel reservation information, transportation information, tickets, emergency contact information, and copies of important documents.

For international travel, check the entry and passport requirements for your destination before leaving.

Clothing

Your clothing needs will depend on your destination, weather, and activities. A basic list might include shirts, pants or shorts, underwear, socks, sleepwear, comfortable shoes, a jacket or sweater, an outfit for special occasions, and swimwear if needed.

Don't forget to check the weather before you leave.

Toiletries

Consider a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hair products, skincare products, a razor, makeup, and personal hygiene items.

Remember that air travel may have restrictions on liquids in carry-on luggage.

Electronics

Depending on your trip: phone, phone charger, portable battery, headphones, tablet, laptop, camera, charging cables, and a travel adapter for international travel.

Put your most important electronics and chargers somewhere easy to reach.

Beach vacation items

If you're headed to the beach, consider a swimsuit, beach towel, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, sandals, a beach bag, a waterproof phone pouch, and a reusable water bottle.

Family travel items

Traveling with children requires a little extra planning. Depending on their age, consider extra clothing, snacks, entertainment, favorite comfort items, chargers, toiletries, child-specific travel items, and necessary supplies.

Make a separate checklist for each child if that makes packing easier.

Check the weather

Before packing, check the expected weather for your destination. A beach destination isn't always hot, and a winter destination may have changing conditions.

Pack for the weather you're actually likely to experience rather than relying only on what the destination is known for.

Personal and health items

Remember anything you personally need during the trip. This may include prescription medications, personal care items, glasses or contact lenses, necessary medical supplies, and first-aid basics.

Keep important medications and essential items accessible while traveling.

Carry-on essentials

If you're flying, consider keeping important items in your carry-on rather than your checked luggage: identification, travel documents, medication, phone, charger, wallet, essential toiletries, and one change of clothes.

That way, you'll have your most important items with you.

Before you leave home

Do a final check at home: lights and appliances checked, doors and windows secured, trash taken out, pets arranged for, mail addressed, and important items packed.

Then a final travel check: identification, tickets and reservations, hotel confirmation, transportation arranged, phone charged, wallet and cards, medications, and bags checked.

Let Zaventra build your packing list

One of the tools we're creating at Zaventra Travel is the Packing List Generator. Instead of using the same checklist for every trip, travelers can enter details such as destination, number of days, season, type of trip, and number of travelers.

The tool then creates a customized packing checklist.

Don't forget to enjoy the trip

Packing is only one part of traveling. Once your bags are ready, don't spend the entire trip worrying about whether you remembered everything.

Plan ahead. Make your checklist. Pack what you need. Then enjoy where you're going.

Explore destinations, discover travel ideas, calculate your trip budget, find transportation, look for travel deals, and prepare for your next adventure. Discover, learn, plan, compare, book — that's the Zaventra way to travel.

Travel requirements can vary by destination and change over time. Always verify current requirements with the appropriate airline, transportation provider, destination authority, or other applicable source before traveling.
